Halloween is right around the corner. You probably have your costume picked out, your pumpkins glowing on the front porch, and a fun Halloween movie on TV. You’re all ready for the festivities, but what about your braces? Celebrate Halloween with colored rubber bands on your braces to match the season! You could go for the classic black and orange, or you can even match it to your costume! Here’s a few ideas based on popular costumes.

Princess – Pink and Purple

Superman or Spiderman – Blue and Red

Witch – Purple or Green and Black

Ghost – White

Vampire – Black and Red

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle – Green

Skeleton – Black and White

Minion – Yellow

Pumpkin – Orange

Pokemon – Yellow and Black

While you’re enjoying the ghosts and goblins on Halloween, remember to take care of your braces. Avoid sticky candy like gummy bears and gum or hard candy and lollipops. The last thing you want is to spend your Halloween night at the...

Packing school lunches can be hard, especially when your child has braces! Apples, carrots, pretzels, and other crunchy snacks are a no-go, which can be tough on the menu.  Biting directly into an apple, for example, can cause the front brackets or wires to pop off. That’s why you need to only pack very soft foods.

Yogurt, oatmeal, puddings, baked potatoes, mashed avocados, scrambled eggs, pureed soups, smoothies and cottage cheese are just a few examples of softer foods your child can safely eat. This doesn’t mean your child must stick to an all-liquid diet, of course. For example, spaghetti with pureed vegetables in the sauce (like spinach and carrots) is an easy way to ensure your child is eating her veggies without risking damage to her braces.

Try a new grain like couscous or quinoa in place of your typical pasta. Melt a soft cheese like Brie or Munster onto your sandwich rather than cheddar or provolone. Craving an apple? Try baking it in the oven for 45 minutes and adding...

When you think of orthodontic treatment, you may automatically assume that it only relates to older children and teens with alignment and spacing issues. But this isn’t the case: Orthodontic treatment at True Image Orthodontics  offers many benefits when applied at a young age.

By considering orthodontic treatment at a younger age, our staff are able to identify your child’s alignment issues early on, and are able to intervene in order to provide treatment as the teeth begin to develop. It is important to start dental care early, not only for proper dental health and the cosmetic benefits, but to improve a child’s overall health as well.

The Benefits of Straighter Teeth

Besides the cosmetic benefits, there are multiple advantages to starting orthodontic treatment at a young age:

It can reduce the extent of orthodontic treatment needed later.

With early treatment, the pediatric dentist helps guide the teeth into their right position to prevent the removal of teeth and improve an overbite, underbite, or crossbite.

In the world of orthodontics, there are many misconceptions. We want to calm your fears and clear up some things you may have heard. If you have any further questions, do not hesitate to call the True Image office!

Misconception #1: My orthodontist is just like my family dentist.

The Truth: While it is true that the goal of both orthodontists and dentists is to help patients achieve lifelong oral health, we go about these goals in completely different ways.

An orthodontist will help patients achieve oral health by addressing the alignment of your teeth. By correcting these issues, we are able to help patients with a variety of oral health issues including; crowded teeth, bite problems and even speech impediments.

A dentist works with patients to prevent and treat a variety of oral hygiene and health issues including; teeth cleaning, gum disease, tooth decay and other common oral health problems.

If you are receiving orthodontic care, you must continue to visit your dentist...

During the summer months, you might be tempted to snack on popsicles, ice cream, and candy. While these sweet treats may taste delicious, you need to be careful. While natural fruit popsicles are fine, lots of added sugar can be bad for your teeth. Tooth decay and cavities can happen while you have braces, but they can be much more difficult to take care of. Don’t get yourself into dental trouble, just avoid eating too much sugar! Here’s what sugar can do to your teeth.

Your mouth contains naturally occurring bacteria, called streptococcus. That bacteria loves to feed on sugar, and once it does, it breaks it down into acids that eat away at tooth enamel. The visible parts of teeth are usually pretty safe from these acids, because they’re washed away when you drink water or brush your teeth. You can run into problems, though, when sweets get lodged in the crevices of your teeth or between your braces, where bacteria have more time to feed on them.

For this reason, soft candies...
