Finding tasty and healthy foods to eat that are easy on sore teeth can be tough! We thought this recipe was perfect for lunch or dinner after you get your braces on, or have them tightened. Plus, it fulfills those Fall pumpkin cravings!


Pumpkin Pepper Soup from Organized Island


2 Tablespoons butter

2 Tablespoons minced onion

1 15 oz can pumpkin puree

1 14 oz can chicken broth

1/2 cup milk (I used 2%)

1/2 to 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes

Melt the butter in a sauce pan and add the minced onion. Once the onion starts to look clear, add the remaining ingredients.  Cook over low heat.


Continue to cook the soup on low until heated through.  There is no need to put through a processor, the soup is already smooth and creamy, but you can if you want it super smooth. This soup goes great with cornbread or dinner rolls.

Keeping your teeth clean is a full time job! Well, maybe not that much work, but it is important! Here are some dental hygiene tips and reminders for our patients:

The Importance of Floss

Don't skimp on the floss. Use a long piece, about an arms-length, that provides enough grip to access the spaces between every tooth, front and back. Wind up most of the floss around the middle finger of one hand and the rest around the middle finger of the other. Use your thumbs and index fingers to grip the floss, and gently slide it between each tooth down to the gum line. Move the floss against the tooth in an up-and-down motion before you go on to the next area. As you move from one tooth to the next, unroll and grip a fresh section of floss to avoid transferring the plaque back on to your teeth.

If you find it difficult to use floss, don't skip cleaning between your teeth altogether. There are other tools you can use, such as a floss holder, wooden sticks, plastic picks and small interdental brushes.

It's not as simple as brushing your teeth and calling it a day. Keeping your teeth healthy takes a few extra steps! Here are some tips you might not have heard before:


How to Floss:

Without flossing, millions (yes, millions) of bacteria can feast on the gunk between your teeth, forming acids that, over time, cause cavities and irritate the gums. Hold a piece of floss between your fingers, roughly two inches apart. Place the strand between your teeth, and pull it gently to one side so it forms a C. Shimmy it up and down, making sure to get below the gum line.

How to Buy Toothpaste:

Find a cavity fighter. Fluoride is the only ingredient approved to fight cavities. You'll see it listed as sodium fluoride, sodium monofluorophosphate, or stannous fluoride, and it helps enamel patch itself up before decay can lead to a cavity. Most pastes also have a base like baking soda to neutralize acids that rot teeth (that's what fluoride- free ones rely on for protection).

During your orthodontics treatment process, you might need one or more of the following removable pieces of equipment.

·       Aligners — an alternative to traditional braces for adults, serial aligners are being used by an increasing number of orthodontists to move teeth in the same way that fixed appliances work, only without metal wires and brackets. Aligners are virtually invisible and are removed for eating, brushing and flossing.

·       Removable space maintainers — these devices serve the same function as fixed space maintainers. They're made with an acrylic base that fits over the jaw, and have plastic or wire branches between specific teeth to keep the space between them open.

·       Jaw repositioning appliances — also called splints, these devices are worn on either the top or lower jaw, and help train the jaw to close in a more favorable position. They may be used for temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ).

As important it is to brush your teeth properly and floss regularly, sometimes you teeth need help from the outside in. Including the right vitamins in your diet, and taking a supplement as needed.

Calcium is essential for strong teeth as well as bones. Calcium can be found in milk, fortified orange juice, yogurt, broccoli, cheese, and other dairy products. Calcium supplements are also available, with different dosages available for your age and teeth.

Vitamin B complex is also essential for the protection of gums and teeth from cracking and bleeding. Copper, zinc, iodine, iron and potassium are also required for maintaining healthy dental hygiene.

Vitamin C is necessary to form and maintain bones, blood vessels, skin, scar tissue, tendons, and ligaments, as well as for wound healing and the repair and maintenance of cartilage and teeth. Foods with Vitamin C include oranges, red peppers, kale, brussels sprouts, and strawberries.

Here are tips for keeping braces and teeth safe during the summer.


Brush after every meal

It’s easy to forget to brush when you’re not on a set schedule. But summery treats like hot dogs and ice cream are particularly damaging to teeth because of the extra sugar. Remember to bring a travel toothbrush wherever you go so you can quickly brush them.


Wear a mouth guard

When you play sports with braces on, your teeth can be at risk. Wear a mouth guard when you play basketball, baseball, or go swimming to keep your teeth safe.


Be prepared for a vacation

Pack extra packs of orthodontia wax, your toothbrush, and your retainers on every trip. Be sure you have the phone number for your orthodontist, so in case of an emergency, you can call us. Sometimes, we might recommend you visit an orthodontist in the city you’re visiting, but otherwise we can give you ways to temporarily fix the problem until you can visit our office.

Soccer, softball, baseball, dance; there are endless options for children, teens, and adults to get moving once the weather starts to warm up. You may wonder - "Can my child safely play sports while wearing braces?" It is an important question for kids, but it also applies to adults wearing braces. After all, even solo activities like mountain biking and Ultimate Frisbee present potential risks to your teeth, especially with braces on. =Yes - you can wear braces and play sports, but you need to be careful. Protecting your smile while playing sports is essential to staying on course with your braces treatment plan. Brushing your teeth while you have braces is extremely important – but its also more difficult than it is without braces! Finding the right toothbrush is the first step to great oral hygiene.

Your toothbrush needs to be small and flexible enough to move easily around your mouth. Remember you have several sides to your teeth - outer (near your cheek or lip), inner (facing your tongue), crown (on the bottom teeth, it's the part of the tooth facing the top of your mouth and on the top teeth, it's the part facing your tongue).

An electric toothbrush designed for cleaning around braces is the best choice. This allows you to use the right amount of pressure, allowing the head to rotate completely. This will provide a more effective cleaning and save time.

Look for an interdental brush with an angled head and brush that can fit around your braces.

A regular electric toothbrush can be very difficult to maneuver around your braces. The bristles will also likely wear down a lot faster because...

If you recently got your braces on or got them tightened, you’re likely dealing with sore teeth. This tightening is a necessary part of the teeth-straightening process, but it can be a nuisance. Luckily there are a few ways to deal with the soreness until it goes away on its own!

Oral anesthetic An oral anesthetic will numb your gums so you don’t feel the pain. These can be found at any pharmacy. Use a cotton swab or your finger to apply the gel directly to your teeth and gums where you feel discomfort.

Over the counter pain medicine An hour before your appointment, take an over the counter pain reliever to help ease any discomfort.

Ice pack Just like any injury, apply a cold ice pack to your mouth can help tremendously. The cold temperature provides a numb sensation in the mouth and decreases inflammation in the sore gums.

Eat soft foods Crunchy foods will likely make the pain worse. Stick to soft foods like pudding, yogurt, or mashed potatoes. Find other recipes for soft foods...
