Have you noticed that your child has a lisp or other speech issues? This may be due to his or her teeth. In a perfect world, your child's teeth would line up perfectly but unfortunately, that is not always the case. When the teeth are misaligned one of the results is an open bite, a known reason for children to speak with a lisp.


With an open bite, both the upper and lower front teeth do not properly meet, creating a gap when the mouth is closed. This opening between the front and bottom teeth not only affects the appearance of your child’s smile but also can lead to a lisp or other speech impediments.


There are several reasons why your child may develop an open bite. It can be caused when there is a misalignment with the jawbone or when they are still losing their teeth and have both baby teeth and permanent teeth. Once the permanent teeth come in, your orthodontist can better tell if the bite will match up correctly or will need orthodontic treatment.

After having your braces placed for the first time, or after an adjustment, your teeth may be very sensitive and you may find it hard to eat certain foods. We always recommend a soft food diet for the first couple days. Things such as:


Mac n cheese


Ice Cream or Frozen Yogurt

Mashed or baked potatoes (with only butter and sour cream)


Cooked Vegetables (boiled, steamed, or roasted)




These are all great options and can be quick and easy for the first or second day. If your teeth are more sensitive to the adjustments, you may need to stick to soft foods for longer and you won’t want to live on ice cream and potatoes alone. You also may prefer a more protein rich diet. Selecting fish for dinner may be a great option. Unlike steak, pork and chicken, fish is soft and flaky so it is a great meal choice for sensitive and painful teeth.


Seafood comes in many flavors and can be prepared quick and easily. Salmon, Tilapia, Swai, Swordfish, there are many choices and each has its own distinct flavor.

If your child has crooked baby teeth, most likely, their adult teeth will be crooked as well. Why is this?

This is because children inherit skeletal and dental features from their parents and their relatives.

Sometimes the teeth are inherited from one relative and the jaw structure from another, resulting in a mismatch in tooth size and jaw size. This can result in too little (or less commonly too much) space for the adult teeth. This will not always become apparent until the later stages of dental development.

Habits in young children can influence the growth of the jaws and position of the teeth. Pacifiers and thumb sucking generally result in some moulding of the jaw growth in both the lower and upper teeth bearing areas. An ‘open bite’ may result.

With all the talk about banning plastic restaurants from coffee shops and restaurants around the country, some patients are wondering whether this could harm their teeth.

Truth is, dentists used to think that using straws could help protect teeth from staining and direct contact with enamel-damaging beverages, but that is no longer the case.The usage of straws doesn’t keep staining liquids,such as coffee, soda, red wine, or other liquids, from touching your teeth.

While direct contact between your teeth and liquids might be avoided slightly with straws, they're not going to protect them entirely, and other techniques are much more effective when it comes to keeping your teeth free from damage.

Even herbal and white teas can erode enamel and cause staining," in addition to white wine. Highly acidic foods and drinks can also lead to tooth discoloration, as can soy sauce, curry and tomato sauce, smoking or chewing tobacco, and certain diseases and even treatments for diseases, such as chemotherapy.

Popsicles are not only a great treat during hot summer days, they can also be soothing on sore gums. Have you tried making your own popsicles before? It's very easy and fun! You can customize your own flavors, and the finished product has no added sugar, compared to store-bought treats. give these a try and let us know how they turn out!


Blackberry Lemon Popsicles

2/3 cup lemon juice , plus zest from lemon

2 1/2 cups vanilla greek yogurt

2 1/2 cups blackberries

2 1/2 cup mixed berry Greek yogurt


In a medium-sized bowl whisk together lemon juice, zest, and vanilla yogurt, set aside.

Puree blackberries and mixed berry yogurt, set aside.

Layer the popsicles as follows; 1 tablespoon lemon, 1 tablespoon blackberry, repeat. Swirl layers if desired.

Gently tap the molds on the countertop to remove any air bubbles. Insert the popsicle sticks, and then freeze for at least 6 hours, or overnight.

If you have braces, you're probably wondering when you can whiten your teeth. And unfrotunately, it is true that your teeth can get more stained while you have braces, if you aren't brushing properly.

While most whitening techniques need to wait until after braces come off, like whitening strips and other professional whitening services, you can do some things to fix it now.

Try whitening your teeth now with these tips:

Whitening Toothpaste

Look for brands that have the American Dental Association (ADA) stamp of approval. Your toothpaste should also have fluoride. 

Whitening toothpastes contain special abrasives such as baking soda and peroxide to remove surface stains from teeth. However, these products will only remove surface stains. They will not change the color of your enamel entirely. Whitening toothpastes won't cause any problems for people with braces. The abrasives in the toothpaste won't cause any breakdown of cement or wear on your wires. Flossing

Getting your braces off is an exciting time, but you can't ride into the sunset with your beautiful smile without abandon! For the rest of your life, your retainer will be a necessary part of your oral care.

At first, you need to wear your retainer every day, all day for 3-6 months. Over time, you can just wear your retainer at night, or every other night.

There are three main types of retainers;

Bonded (Permanent) Retainers

Bonded retainers use a metal band and are secured to your teeth, so you can't remove it on your own. This makes it a no-brainer to keep your teeth straight. They last around 3-5 years, so if you start to see damage, you'll want to go to your dentist or orthodontist and find a new solution.

Hawley Retainers

These are the traditional metal and plastic retainers. Sometimes, patients can pick their own color of the plastic for a custom retainer. They have a metal wire that wraps around the teeth to keep them in place. These are very durable, but still wear out over time, around 5-7 years.

School is almost out! Are you going on any fun summer vacations? In all the fun of swimming, camping, exploring and sight-seeing, you might discover an issue with your braces. Crunching down on unfamiliar food, getting hit in the mouth while playing sports, or just losing a wire while out of town can be very scary as an orthodontia patient!

Luckily, there are always ways to care for your braces and your mouth when you are out of town or on an adventure.

First, be prepared. Always bring extra wax when you travel or to put in your beach bag. Remember to bring flossers as well. If you play a lot of sports, you might want to consider getting a mouthguard to keep your braces and mouth.

You also can't forget your oral hygeine while traveling! It can get easy to skip brushing after a long day of fun, but if you're eating a lot of sugar on vacation, brushing is extremely necessary. Never forget your toothbrush when traveling!

Maybe you had braces as a child, but now your teeth have moved. Or maybe you've never had braces, but you're interested in making your teeth straighter. It might be time to consider Invisalign?

Invisalign works like braces, though instead of metal brackets and wires, it's a series of clear plastic retainers that move your teeth incrementally, week by week. You wear them all day (except when eating) and can take anywhere from 4 months to a year.

Invisalign is a common solution for adult patients, who want to avoid the appearance of metal braces. While unfortunately some patients do need metal braces, Invisalign is a great option for many.

Invisalign retainers are practically invisible when you are wearing them. You might have a slight lisp at the beginning, but as your mouth gets used to wearing the retainers, it should go away. We have many patients who say their friends don't even notice they're wearing the retainers!

The few days after you get your braces put on, or after an appointmetn with your orthodontist can leave teeth and gums sore. Eating soft foods is a good idea so you don't feel so much pain.

Even when your mouth is feeling good, you know you should avoid super crunch foods while you have braces.

But having smoothies, soup, and pudding for every meal can get old. Luckily, there are lots of other soft-food options if you think outside the box.

Try, for example, breakfast for dinner! Many traditional breakfast foods are very soft - perfect for those with sore teeth. Consider this menu:


Soft scrambled eggs (you can also put cheese in them!)

Soft fruits like grapes, cut-up pears, or oranges

Oatmeal with cinnamon

Soft toast
