If you have braces, you're probably wondering when you can whiten your teeth. And unfrotunately, it is true that your teeth can get more stained while you have braces, if you aren't brushing properly.

While most whitening techniques need to wait until after braces come off, like whitening strips and other professional whitening services, you can do some things to fix it now.

Try whitening your teeth now with these tips:

Whitening Toothpaste

Look for brands that have the American Dental Association (ADA) stamp of approval. Your toothpaste should also have fluoride.

  • Whitening toothpastes contain special abrasives such as baking soda and peroxide to remove surface stains from teeth.
  • However, these products will only remove surface stains. They will not change the color of your enamel entirely.
  • Whitening toothpastes won't cause any problems for people with braces. The abrasives in the toothpaste won't cause any breakdown of cement or wear on your wires.

Flossing

Flossing can help you keep teeth white. Food and other debris caught between your teeth can cause decay and discoloration. In addition, you can develop gingivitis or other gum disease.

Rinse your mouth after eating.

Food and drinks that sit on your teeth after eating can weaken enamel and stain teeth. Even if you can't brush your teeth after every meal, rinse your mouth with water or even mouthwash to help wash away the acid and bacteria.
